Wilderness Garden Route : Wilderness has become a popular holiday resort for those who wish to get away
from normal life and escape into the countryside for a while! It is an absolute must for any visit to the Garden Route, if you are just driving through you will find it hard not to stop for a closer look. Wilderness is surrounded by many rivers, natural lakes and lagoons. This makes it a great spot for water sports. There are 2500 ha of National Park with rivers, lakes, estuaries and almost 20km of coastline. Wilderness is a birdwatchers paradise as many species of water birds can be seen there.

The many other types of activities include hiking, horse riding, dolphin and whale-watching, paragliding, mountain-biking, scenic drives, day tours, ferry cruises, angling and other water sports. The famous "Map of Africa Viewpoint" offers fantastic view of the Kaaimans River Valley . Another good viewpoint is Dolphin Point which gives an outstanding view of the ocean, the point gets its name from the number of dolphins which can be spotted from here on a daily basis as well as whales which come here to breed during the winter month. In the heart of the Garden Route you will find the Wilderness National Park . Nature trails wind through thick forest and along relaxing rivers, look out for the brightly coloured Knysna lourie, or one of the many kingfisher species that are homed in the Wilderness area. In the spring months many beautiful coloured flowers grace the ground and provide a beautiful picnic spot.

Wilderness National Park offers many activities, for all ages. Dolphins can be seen throughout the year from Dolphin Point, and whales can be viewed during the end of winter and the spring months. Hire Canoeing, cycling, abseiling, kloofing, paragliding and hang-gliding are all there for your enjoyment. There are activities for all ages and abilities, wander along a forest path or visit the bird hide and discover the riches of bird life. Camping spots are available under the stars alongside the river as well as log cabins.

Wilderness National Park begins in the west by the Touw River mouth and carries on till the Swartvlei estuary where it joins with the Goukamma Nature Reserve, giving protection to five lakes and the Serpentine, a winding ribbon of water joining Island Lake to the Touw River.
